Tournament Season!!

The fall recreation tournament season is now here!! Tournaments offer a great change to get out there in
front of your friends, family and peers to show how well your training is going!

Tournaments provide an excellent warm up to a formal grading as you get a chance to perform your kata in
front of a group of judges!

The success of tournaments depends on the support received from the dojo membership.  Volunteers are
always welcomed to assist at the tables and tournament logistics.  Please do not hesitate to come forward
to volunteer!

We are also working on some items that we hope will allow the tournaments to flow quicker and ensure all
the competitors are registered correctly and properly informed of their competition schedules.

Soon to be available on the NSKA website will also be a list of the WKF rule amendments that are made for
our competitions, as well as, mandatory equipment.

New Divisions!

One goal of the NSKA this year is to increase the number of dojo members out at tournaments.   The first
step we are taking to encourage the “weekend warrior” to come out is by introducing 4 new divisions!

The divisions are 35+ Male Kumite, 35+ Female Kumite, 35 + Mixed Adult Kata, and Adult Team Kata.

Depending on the number that turn out, will depend on whether or not we break the divisions up further
by ranks.

Kumite in these new divisions will have some rule adjustments made to limit contact to the head.

More WKF rule adjustments will be made available at the tournaments and soon on the NSKA website.

Further, the various styles are encouraged to offer “special events” or demonstrations when they host a
tournament.

Working with Sports NS and so much more!

The NSKA is working with Sports NS on the possibilities of hosting our website.  In doing this, we are
looking at ways to revamp our site so that it offers appropriate and timely information.

One of our main goals with the new website is to make the tournament pre-registration process easier as
well as allowing dojos to register their membership.

There are also members on the Board that are working with Sports NS and taking time to fill out the
numerous forms so that we may have a chance to be awarded grant monies to support the various
services of the NSKA.

The president and various members of the board have been also working hard on our long term
development plan, 3 year budget and outcomes that Sports NS requires.

Outside of the work with Sport NS, various members of the Executive and Board of the NSKA are working
towards creating NSKA policies to support decision making when it comes to funding of athletes, officials,
coaches; working with the NKA on the processes to deliver the, NCCP course; documenting guidelines for
tournaments; refining awards policies; documenting new policies such as the harassment policy; revising
and modernizing the NSKA bylaws.

If you have any questions on any of these initiatives please contact us

New England Competitions

In an effort to broaden the competition base, we have made contact with the New England Karate
Association whom are members of the USA NKF and follow the WKF rules.  Ideally this relationship will
evolve over the years where at least once a year we send a group down to one or more of the New
England competitions and they would encourage their athletes and members to head up to Nova Scotia.

The Massachusetts Karate Championships will take place on November 2, 2008.  If you would like
registration info please contact Greg Da Ros at darosgo@hotmail.com
Pre-registration ends Oct 25th.

International Official!!

We would like to congratulate Sensei Dave Griffin who successfully attained the level of International
Kumite C Referee at the PanAms in Chile in September.   Dave is the first Nova Scotian to achieve WKF
internationally kumite certification.

Great work Dave!
